United States Families: Stair-step Family (Pennsylvania, late 1890s)

American family 1890s
Figure 1.--Here we have about as perfect a stair-step family as you can get. There are five children, four boys and a girl. They are not identified, but looks to be about 4-14 years old. The cabinent card portrait is not dated, but would have been taken in the 1890s. The outfits and the indication of 'Extra Finish'. We would guess it was probably taken in the late-1890s. Note that the three older brothers wear identical double-breasted suits with high lapels, flap pockets and knee pants. The only difference is the collars and neckwear. Notice how the little ones are holding hands.

Note that there is not a hint of Fauntleroy styling. The Fauntleroy era (1885-1905) was important at the time, but declining. Even the little boy has a tiny bow despite the populrity of large floppy bows. Note the left/right difference in the lapel buttoning. The younger boy wears a pattened suit with sailor styling. The little girl had riglets, hair bows, and a dress with baloon shoulders. Notice how the little ones are holding hands. All the children wear black long stockings and high-top shoes. The studio was Fenstemaker in Berwick, Pennsylvania.
