Here we see a cabinet card showing a large extended family. At first we thought this was a farm family, but on relection it seems more likely to be a small town. America was rapidly urbanizing at the time with fast growing industrial cities. The majority of Americans, howeevr, still lived in rural areas. There is no accompanying information it could have been taken any time around the turn of the 20th century. We thought this might be an early-20th century portrait, but the women's dresses strongly suggest the mid-1890s. Had we been forced to go just by the mount we might have guessed the early-1900s decade. Fauntleroy suits were still popular. The boy looks to be about 5-years old. He wears a light-weight summer classic Fauntleroy suit. Notice the bicycle which was becoming very popular at the time. Towns of any size were openig bicycle repair shops. All we know for sure was that the studio was Young in Humeston, Iowa. We believe that the studio sent apghitographer out to the fmily to take the portrait. Afrer tyhe turn-of-the century as smpshots becam more common, they could be used to make cabinet cards. This was an extra-large 8x10 inch card.
