The Joseph Rivard family was photographed near Detroit, Michigan in 1912. The Rivards were a family of farmers, Roman Catholic, and lived in the area that is now the Detroit Metroprolican Airport. Catholic farm families were not unknown, but Protestant farm families were much more common. We are not sure about the family's origins. Rivard we believe is a French name. They may be related to the original French settlers in the Great Lakes area. Standing in the back row, from left to right, are Cecil, Loyola, Leander, Raymond, and Frances. Sitting, from left to right, are Joseph (son), Joseph Rivard (father) Aurelius, Frances (the mother), and Ruth. Two of the youngest boys are Cecil (about 14 and wearing above-the-knee knickers with black long stockings) and Joseph (about 11 or 12 in knee pants and black long stockings). We are not sure about the youngest boy, Aurelius, wearing the sailor tuinic or the girl. We also have an individual portrait of Loyola Rivard, taken in 1909 when he was about eleven, dressed for his first communion at St. Clement's Church in the Detroit area. Here Loyola is wearing a knee trousers suit with black long stockings. The youngest boy between his parents is Aurelius. We are not sure about his age, but would guess about 5 years old. He wears ringlet curls with a sailor tuinic. Ruth wears a white dress and white long stockings.
