Lewis J. and Guy Overaker Sr. (Springfield, Illinois--1955)

Figure 1.--The photograph taken in 1955 are of Lewis J. Overaker and his father, Guy Overaker. They were photographed near their house in Springfield, Illinois. Lewis, aged 12, wears striped Bermuda shorts with argyle ankle socks and a white short-sleeved shirt. He has the family dog in his arms. Notice the short, almost crew-cut hair cut. The shorts are Bermuda style--fashionable in 1955 among the more affluent families, but more common on the East coast than in the Midwest.

Lewis himself tells us, " I wish I had some memories of the clothes for you. The ONLY thing I can think of is that "Bermuda shorts" as we called them, were not universally popular for teenagers in the 1950s. Many boys, at least in the Midwest, did not wear them, and I was just a bit experimental, forlack of a better word, to wear them and they were not always easy to find, like today! Knee length was the style. We used to call tee shirts, "soft shirts", as least for kids, and they would normally be tucked in."
