United States Boys' Headwear: 1950s Chronology--Winter

Figure 1.-- Here we see Seattle kids at a fuhing derby. Notice all the winter caps the boys are wearing. The oress caption read, "Some Catch: Boy and girl fishermen. officials, parents and spectators gathered around a long table at Ray's Boathouse in Ballard yesterday, examining the catch atbthe second annual Rauy;s Kid's Dock Fishing Derby." The photograph was dated March 22. 1953. I can't get the bnouse over feature to work. To bsee the other half of the photograph, click here.

The one major exception was the winter. There was a seasonal divide, especailly on really cold days. Once the weather got cold, boys did begin to wear caps. Here we see a good samolebof thevcaps. Many had ear flaps. Boys had several styles of winter caps. The most common one was a kind of baseball-styled cap dine in a heavy material. There was akso a woodsaman style, but the baseball style was more common. We also dee a few of helmet-style aviator caps thatbwere popuklar in the 1920s-40s. Girls did not wear these winter caps. Thdy were a boys style. But both boys and girls wore stocking caps. Despite the name, stocking caps were not a true cap. A caps has a bill or peak. The term stocking cap developed in the sence of casual headwear. Some girls wore berets during the winter as you can see pn the previous page.
