United States Sailor Cap Styles: Unknown Caps

Figure 1.--This cabinet card portrait shows an unidentified American boy. The portrait is not dated, but we would huess was taken about 1910. The fact that he is wearing knickers rather than knee pants helps to date it. We at first thought the headwear was a turned up wide-brimmed hat. But we have never noted one with a embroidered design on the underside as we see here. But there appears to be a band around the underside which you do not see on sailor hats. We are inclined to think that this is a saucer style sailor hat. As the boy is wearing pushd bacl on this head, we can not see the crown so we are unsure anout just wht we are looking at here.

Here we will archive photographs of caps we are not sure about, either because we do not recognize the style or because the available photographs do not give us a good view of the cap. We only have one angle. This is usually enough, but in a few instances we are just not sure. There are not a lot of sailor caps that we are not familiar with, but several images are a little confusing. We will post them here and hope that our readers can offer some insights that we have not noticed.
