American 1870s Hosiery: Gender Trends

girls long stockings
Figure 1.-- This tinj-type portrait shows two girls, presumably sisters. They wear identical white dresses, lockets, striped stockings, and high-top shoes. Even their hairdos are identical. The stockings look white, but are identical striped stockings. The tin-type is undated, but looks like the 1870s to us. The girls look to be about 5-8 years of age.

Gender differences in hosiery are not apparent. At least that is our preliminary assessment. Gender differences did develop later, but we do not yet note them in the 1870s. We see both genders wearing dark stockings as well as the striped stockings. In the early-70s both boys and girls wore white stockings. Later white stockings were primarily assiociated with girls, except for younger boys, but this was not yet the case in the early- abd mid-19th century. Our initial assessment is that there were no gender differenes associated with hosiery, but that is something that we need to confirm as our archive expands.
