United States Boys' Floppy Bows: Specific Colors--Blue Shades

Figure 1.--Here is a wonderful hand-colored photo of an unidetified boy with a light-blue floppy bow. The relstively small bow sugeests it was taken after the turn of the 20th century. The star pattern suggests it was taken in the 1910s after 1912. Note the boy's blouse is rather simple. It was a wall portrait housed in a tiger striped oval frame with oval glass.

As best we can tell, blue was the most popular color for the floppy bows worn by merican boys. Quite a few of the colorized portraits we have found show boys wearing blue bows. This is still a preliminary assessment as we have only sarchived a small number of colorized images. There are of course many shades of blue. The blues used for floppy bows seem primarily the lighter shades at least in the colorized images we have found to date. This is probably becuse ligh blue contrasted best with dark suits. We are not sure why blue was so popular. We are not sure it was a ender matter. Girls also wore blue bows, but the large floppy collar bows were most popular for boys.
