Figure 1.--These American boys are dressed alike with blazers and white shorts, perhaps for Sunday school during the summer. Unfortunately we have no information about the photograph. Image courtesy of the RS collecion.

These American boys are dressed alike with blazers and white shorts, perhaps for Sunday school during the summer. Despite the difference in age, mom is dressing them alike. We have no information on this photograph, but it looks to have been taken in the late 1920s or early 30s. It is almost certainly American. The image is from an American collection and the white shorts and ankle socks look more American than British.

Nationality

While we have no provinance for this photograp, we believe it is almost certainly American. The image is from an American collection. The white shorts and ankle socks look more American than British.

Chronology

The photograph it looks to have been taken in the late 1920s or early 30s. We have noted other photographs of white shorts and knickers being worn by American boys in the 1920s an 30.

Age

The older brother looks to be about 12 years old. His little brother looks about 4 years old. Despite the difference in age, the boys are dressed quite similarly. We are not sure if the difference in jackets have age connotations. The shorter length of the youngr boy's shorts presumably is a reflection of his age. We are not sure if the socks and shoes have any ge connotations.

Outfit

Despite the difference in age, mom is dressing these brothers alike. Both boys wear dark suit jackets. The older boy wears a double breasted jacket while the younger boy a single breasted jacket. Both boys wear white short pants. Curiously, while the rest of their outfits are narly identical, the boys wear different colored socks and shoes. White ankle socks and dark shoes for little brother, dark ankle socks and white shoes for big brother. One wonders why it was that the boys are so carefully coordinated of colors and tones until you get to their shoes and socks. It was ot uncommon to dress brothers alike, but it was more common to dress brothers closer in age alike.

Seasonality

The white shorts were almost cetainly summer wear. The jackets probably are suit jackets with matching pants. During the summer, mother apparently has them wearing white shorts. Perhaps they are dressed for Sunday school during the summer.

Reader Comments

A HBC reader comments, "I believe that the little brother's suit was fairly new, because it looks like Mom has moved him up to a proper fitting dress jacket rather than the move juvenile dress clothes that he probably had been wearing. From the looks of the jacket on big brother, Mom must buy the boys' clothes and hope that they fit for a few years. Older brother looks about 12 years old, and his jacket looks like it fits him properly when he was more like 10. Mom must also be stretching out the "short pants years" on big brother too, because they look like they were just purchased, and will last a few more years than his tight jacket. Little brother looks about 4 years old. The two are dressed like they were closer in age.
