Large Florid Cabinet Cards

Figure 1.--This cabinet card portrait shows two California brothers, Staon and Vance Black. We are not sure about the date, but would guess the early-1890s. The cabinet card was unusual, it had fancy matting and was was larger than the standard cabinet card at the time, 7 1/2" x 9 7/8". Click on the image to see the card. We canroughly date many mounts, but this one we are unsure about. The studio was Nathan B. Strong in Eureka, California.

We have done a lot of work attempting to develop bavk ground nformation that can be used to date old photographs, including cabinet cards by building a basic chronology. hat we know already has helped to approximate the dates of undated imahes. The clothing styles here we believe are 19th century styles. We are less sure about dating the mount as we hace seen so few of these fancy, large sized florid mounts. Hopefully we will find some dated examples as HBC expands.
