American Cabinet Cards: The 1900s--Styles

double-breasted suits 1880s
Figure 1.--

Here we have an unidetified Pittsburg boy wearing a double-breasted suit. While we do not know his name, we do know that he is 7 years old. The boy is holding a riding crop. We cannot tell if he jacket has high-set lapels or is collar buttoning. His suit is a standard style with flap pockets that we see many American boys wearing. This boy's outfit, however, is a little different. Nice the huge Eton-like collar and white floppy bow. These items were very popular during the Fauntleroy Craze, but were less common with double-breasted suis. This was especially the case with such large collars and bows. With double-breasted suits we sometines do not see Fauntleroy items at all or at the most modest collars and bows. The portrait is undated, but on he back as part of the printed matrial it says, "copy righted 1889". It is not clear what is being copy righted, but we assume it was the art work on the back of the card. Now this could mean that the portrait was taken n 1889 or subsequent years. We assume his would mean 1889 or the very early-1890s.
