United States Norfolk Suit Elements: Trousers--Knickers

Figure 1.-- This unidentufued portrait of two brothers is unidentified. It weould have been taken in the early-1910s. The postcard back pprtrait has a divided bavk meaning it probably dated to 1907-15. Both boys wear Norfolk knicker suits. They look new. They are the same color, perrgaps not the bavy blue that was common. Theolder boy's jacket ha=s the beklt, but not the vertical pleats associated with Norfolk styling. The other difference is the younger boy's striped blouse and their caps. The younger boy has a cap matching his suit. The older boy has a jaunty striped cap. Both weear long stockings and what look to be canvas shoes, something we do not see all that commonly with suits. The boys look to be about 10-15 years old. The studio was F.C. Mader in Chillicothe, Ohio.

Knickers became common for Ameerican boys in the 1910s. We see European boys wearing knickers in the late-19th century, but they were not common in Americaw here knee pants were standard. Suddenly that began to change anout 1908. We have no idea why. We have never seen fashion historians address this subject. The switch to knickers were not only sudden, but very quickly knickers became standard for American boys. We see some younger boys still wearing knee pants, but the great majority of American boys wpre knickers in the 1910s and 20s And Norfolk suits were very popular at the time. Here we see two Ohio brothes, we think in the early-1910s. The boys wear similat, but not identucal Norfolk knicker suits. The unidentified boys on the previous page, we think in the 1910s is another good example. Note the long stockings. Another good example is Raymond Uferte wearing a knickers Norfolk suit in 1921. Thus for the last two ndecades that Norfolk suits were popular, they were mostly worn with knickers. Knickers were also common in the 1930s, especially the early-30s but Norfolk suits by this time were declining in popularity. Knicker suits were also worn with long stockings although in the late-1920s we begin to see brightly patterned knee socks.
