American Immigration: Unknown Countries

Figure 1.--This AZO back post card was dated July 5, 1919. We suspect that after celebrating Independence Day on Friday, they had a celebration for the Old Country and got dressed up in their national dress on Saturday. Even so, notice all the American flags. The folk dress should help usidentify the country, but we can not yet do that. It looks to be some where in Eastern Europe. We might guess Poland, butwe are not at all sure. We hope that readers nmight know.

By the time that European emmigration began reaching really large numbers after the Civil War, huge number of photographic portaits were being taken and the cost of those portraits was steadily following. All but the poorest American could afford to gave a portrait taken. Unfortunatlely, most of the resulting portrait do not indicate national origins, although if the names are indicated, we can get some ideas about national origins. The countries involved were much more diverse than before the Civil War. We see far more Catholics entering the country. Until after the Civil War, the primary Catholic group was Irish. After the Civil War we begin to see Italians in large numbers for the first time. We also see Eastern Europeans for the first time in large numbers. Some nationalities are fairly easy to identify. The many Eastern European groups are difficult to identify. So unless there is some accomoamying identification, we are unsure about the a nationality of many photograph we have archived. We are hpoing that readers may help us identify some of these portraits.
