Sailor suits were a very popular style for boys around the turn of the century. Dee wears an emmaculate white sailor suit without any detailing (figure 1). Many sailor suits had stripes or other detailing, but we also many without detailing like the one here. Even the dickey is all white. He has a dark presumably black scarve. Note the diagonal slash pocket in the blouse. Also notice how the blouse blouces out over the waistband of the pants. There would have been a drawstring to to tighten the blouse. The outfit is a kneepants sailor suit. The Kneepants are cut at knee level and have the standard three buttons at the knee hem. Also notice the crease in the pants. Dee wears his white suit with contrasting black long stockings. There were other colors, but black stockings were very commonly worn by boys and girls, even with white outfits. A They are rather heavy stockings, perhaps worn over long-leg underwear. A white sailor suit like this would have been for Summer wear, although it is curious Dee wears heavy stockings with it. He also had a dark reefer jacket which would have been worn in cool weather. (click on figure 1.) (It never gets really cold in Los Angeles.) Note that he wears his reffer jacket with the sailor collar folded nearly over it. He also wears his saucer sailor cap with a front emblem in one frame, but it appears in several others. Presumably mother was anxious that the cap appear in the photos even if Dee was not wearing it.
