Theatrical Activities--School Play

Figure 1.--.

In addition there may be drama nights which generally meanss performances by the different forms or even clubs. Some schools have a drama club. We also notice film societies at the schools. These plays are often very popular with the children and provide a range of useful experiences.

Form Plays

The door opened with a screech like that of a barn owl. Sudenly, without warning, clanging of chains and ghostly screeches ran through the corridors of Canterville Chase leaving Mrs. Otis in a fit. Who was it that every fortnight haunted the chase leaving doors open and people in madness? It was Chapman of Form III, who acted brilliantly in the 'Canterville Ghost'. On Wednesday, December 5th, Form Plays were held and cted by boys who had written and rehearsed them in their free time for two whole weeks, and on the night not more than a few mistakes were made. The first play was 'The Emperor's New Clothes'. This was a very good play which started the evening well. McLeod ii was the emperor and acted his embarassing part like a real actor without any blushes or tears. His embarassing part was when he had to put on his new clothes which were transparent. He did of course have his vest and pants on, and a screen to change behind. IB's was extremely good and piked te announcer with care. ....

Form II A Play

Mrs Snow had handed our several copies of James and the Giant Peach, in a play version, earlier in the term and it was several weeks before we began to take it serriously. One dull morning Mrs Snow brightened up many faces by saying that it was so good that we would do it in front of the whole school and Pre-Prep. Eventually we learnt our words. At lat the big day arrived and clothes in worn-costumes, leotards and many other things, we clammered on to the stage. Happy smiling faces from every angle. I was an earthroom. We whispered exciteedly to each other in the changeover between scaenes and thoroughly enjoyed acting. We went home tired and very pleased with ourselves.

Samina Ahmed, Junior Wyvern (Queen's College Junior School), 1989-90.

First Form Observations: Peter Pan

I am playing Mr Darling in Peter Pan and every night I take home my script to learn my lines. Usually we practice the play in the classroom and Barnaby Tinsley comes from Form II because he is Captain Hook. -- Stuart Ford, 8.4

When I came to the classroom to dress in my costume, I was very nervous. Mext, I went to the craftroom for my make-up. The Indians wore a lot of brown make-up and I think they looked the best. When it was time for the Indians to go on stage, I was afraid I would not be able to jump up. Once we were on stasge, we walked around in a circle, then we sat down ans smoked pipes. -- Lucy Adams, 8.0

Looking Back: Autumn Term 1977

Our form did a play, I was a baby bird -- a lot bigger than the mother bird. A boy had to pick me up. I wore a great big beak and some wings that I had made in my art lessons. It was very funny indeed. All the actors got a sweet after the play. Roger Lee, 10.9

The trees in our play had to have quite a bit of mak-up put on their chests; Mrs Floyd put it on for us. It tickled when it was being put on. Mark Strawson, 10.8

I was a lion in the school play; I wore brown tights and a jumper and had a plaited tail made of wool. I am not very good at keeping a straight face and luckily for me I also hd to wear a mask. When Mr. Floyd said, "Suddenly a lion's roar made her frightened all the more", I had to say "Meow", because it was a topsy-turvy play. Nicholas Alexander, 9.2
