British Preparatory Schools Photo Essays: Activities--Astronomy

Figure 1.--.

Astronomy is another subject that fascinates children. The boys seem especially interested. I'm not sure quite what is the reason for the gender difference. There is not a great deal of time to approach the subject in the science curriculum, but it is often made available to the children as a club activity. This usually depends as to whether there is an interested staff member. Of course Britain with its often cloudy skies is not the best place to persue astronomy. In addition the long days during the summer term means tht there are also seasonal limitations. Despite the constraints, the children are often very enthusiastic.

Astonomy

Our usual season is from September to March, but this year, by popular demand, it was extended through the Summer Term. Baker, Vilchez, Lundin, Studd, et. al. have shown a great interest in this vast subject -- from the Big Bang to the latest news on the exploration of space and now colonisation plans for the Moon (USA) and Mars (USSR) in the 1990s and early in the net century, plus the building of space stations orbiting the Earth. Observations of the heavens is, as usual, limited by our changeable weather, but we have managed some interesting telescopic views of the Moon, stars and planets during the year.
