Fives is another British sport related to several racket sports, but played without a racket. Like squash an enclosed court is needed. The name presumably derives from five fingers as the hand is used rather than a racket. The gme is believed to have been first played using the buttresses of larger church buildings. Very similarvto handball which is played in America. Several prep scools have suash-five courts or access to one. The sport is generally played as a recreational intra-school activity.
Fives was played sporadiclly throughout the year with the usual emphasis on the winter months. At both senior and junior level the top players reached a good standard of play with Johnson i clearly the top senior and Waghorn pre-eminent among the juniors. In an impromptu staff match the staff soundly defeated the boys not least because the weaker members of the staff found the exigencies of end of term too pressing to complete their fixtures while the more accomplished also seemed ti have more time.
