British Preparatory Schools Photo Essays: Golf

Figure 1.--.

Golf is not an important sport at prep schools, but quite a number provide an interduction to the sport. There are not normally inter-school competitions. Some schools have intra-school cup competitions. Golf is some times done as a club or activity. There is an annual IAPS tournament.

Golf Club

The club operated in the Winter and Summer term and much enthusiasm was shown. In the two prize competitions held in the Summer, the Bourne Cup was won by Nicholas Mellor, his opponent in the final, Gary Bell unfortunately having to scratch owing to injury. The Pownall Trophy was won by Richard Evans, after a 'sudden death' playoff wuth Fergus Torrance and Russel Eadie. In September 1970, Daniel Garner and Charles Sharp represented the school in the I.A.P.S. Golf Tournament at Stowe School, Bucks. There were over 100 competitors from prep schools all over Britain and Daniel Garner did well to come in 11th with a total of 37 Stableford points. Charles Sharp came 27th in his age group with 21 points. We are agaun entering a team in Septmber of this year.

Golf

The Easter term's weather, being kinder than last year, enabled much golf to be enjoyed. Moorhouse came through as a skilled performer, winning both the senior competitions, but not without a struggle in one where he was taken to the 'nineteenth' hole by Wilde i in order to decide the issue. The junior competition was won comfortably by Waghorn. The fuller programme of golf must have improved their competence as they beat the staff covincingly by seven to one.
