British Preparatory Schools Photo Essays: Activities--Mythology

Figure 1.--.

We note one school that had a Mythology Hobby which met on Saturday. Here the children learned about the great Greek myths. They rather appeal to children because they are such fascinating stories. We are not sure how common a hobby or club like this was. Normally an activity like this is taken by the Latin master.

Mythology Hobby

Also ... has been added the mythology hobby on Saturdays in the first two terms. We looked at the Perseus and Jason legends and watched two related films "Clash of the Titans" and "Jason and the Argonauts" by courtesy of Mr Dunsmore-RRouse. .... "Why," I was asked, "do we bother with these stories ? After all nobody believes them and they're not true, are they Sir?" "Of course he doesn't nelieve them, he teaches Scripture," comes a rejoinder from some other quarter. Godless, silly myths, St. Paul called thr beliefs of some of the ancient world. The Greek gods certainly were silly, quarrelsome, proud and violent, and it seems strange to us that anyone should have believed in them. However, we learn about the ancient world not only through their language but also through their stories. To begin to understand the way they thought, we learn their languages, and the stories they grew up with, for these stories expressed their ideas about the world and the forces that seem to govern it. By comparison with the Gospels, many of the Greek myths are dark and frightening and we can see how lucky we are to be free of such dreadfulness. Yet many others are dlightful and amusing and worth knowing simply because they are good stories and because they are a part of a common European heritage.
