British Preparatory Schools Photo Essays: Activities--Religion

Figure 1.--.

Religion plays a role in school life, although this has declined somewhat in recent years. This also varies somewhat from school to school. Religion is a curriculum subject at most prep schools and there are religious covocations at the periodic assemblies. Boarding schools arrange a Sunday service, either at the school or a nearby church. In addition to these religious activities, there may be a religious club activity. This normally is Christian Union, depending on the schools denominational affiliation. Christian Unions (CUs) are evangelical religious fellowship groups. CUs are found more commonly at universities and secondary schools, but afew have been organozed at prep schools. There are not very many because CUs are student-led groups and prep schools children are a little young for this approach. Also the general decline in church membership and relgious worship in Britain is another factor. Most of the children get more religion at school than they do at home. This was not always the case.

What a nice enthusiastic bunch we have had this year, always arriving early and wanting to sing their favourite songs. I find Friday evenings a really up-lifting and enjoyable time. In the first term we went round to other staff houses, and the host gave the talk. Some of those visited were the Bawtrees, the Collingtons and the Fryers. Richard and Judy Fryer have also had small groups of children down to their flat on Saturday night for specific Bible study and this has been a valuable addition to what we have been able to offer. Richard and Judy were our guest speakers at the C.U. camp on the lovely hot weekend at the start of May. We were able to have our service outside in the field, and it was a special time when God was able to apeak to us in a new way. Our thanks go to Miss Hinfley who also came and shared some deep things and masterminded the cooking. At the end of the summer term about thirdy of us went to a 'Praise party' where Ishmael was leading the evening. We learned something new about praising God and there was a new vitality and joy in the following C.U. evening, the last one of the Summer Term when we recorded a tape of the songs for Mr and Mrs Scott to take with them as they move away. We now look forward to the exciting things which God has got in store for us next year.
