British Preparatory Schools Photo Essays: Activities--Stamp Club

Figure 1.--.

Some schools have a stamp collecting club. I think stamp collecting is not as popular as it once was , primarily because there are so many competing activities availasble. Even so there are still some avid philatelists. Most schools have some foreign students or parents who are abroad and the stamps on their letters are eagerly sought after.

Stamp Club

We have a number of boys who are keen collectors, specializing in their chosen countries; and also many new members who are very keen to collect stsamps grom every country possible. During this year we have had gifts of stamos from Edward Keelan and James Milne which were very gratefully received. If you have any old abbums or stamps thsat are not wanted, we would welcome them for the stamp club. This year we have had some quizzes as well as visits from the newly formed Tavistock SDtamp Club and several other keen collectors have 'popped in" from time to time to show their sams or swap some duplicated. We make it a policy never to but or sell stamps at thids stage of collecting. Any new members are very welcome on Wednesday evenings at 5 pm.

Stamps

A small group has been meeting regularly in the History Room to exchange stamps and the learn more from one another. Most people are keen to add to their collection of modern Britosh stamps, the pictorials are always eagerly awaited and to alesser extent so are the new definitves. Some have even examined the phosphor lines in the hope of finding a rarity. In the coming wintr months we hope to encurage a few more to join our ranks and this includes dayboarders. To date, Christopher Haywatd hs easily been the most loyal supporter of our group.

Stamp Club

Enthusiasts met on Monday evenings in the Autumn and Spring Terms to buy and exchange stamps, to learn to use the catalouge and to discover something of the mysteries of perforations and watermarks. It was good to see so many new members, sdome of them collecting for the first time, and also to see some of the 'old hands' beginning to appreciaye the older perhaps duller looking stamps rather thn the brightly coloured cheap ones produced by some countries nowadays.
