Almost all modern prep schools have a well equipped art room. These vary in size and appountment. The mediums and disciplines persued depends somewhat on the available facilities and the skills of the at teacher. The facilities thus affect the kind of work that can be persued. Here the size of the school is a major factor. The art room is always a fascinating part of the school, normally full of the children's work and work in progress. Some schools have a specialized pottery room with wheels and a kiln.
The pottery room continues to flourish apace through all weathers -- a record flash flood left it six inches under water; and earlier this year, the snow and icy blizzards reduced it to a frozen waist of drains, taps and clay despite the valiant efforts of busy fan heaters and night store radiators. Between disasters, which then included burst pipes, much interesting and varied work has been managed. One construction improvement has been to move the kiln 'round the corner' and to construct a child-proof cage round it, thus fulfilling current safety standards. Not only has this provided a much needed kiln room but also more space in the working area of the pottery. Two new kivk wheels have joined the facilities bringing the compliment to three, to which will be added in September a Cowley double-drive power wheel.
