The fine arts are both part of the curriculum and part of the activities program. The balance here varies among the various disciplines. Art is probably given more attention in the curriculum than the other diciplines. The children may spend more time in music, primarily because such a large number of students at most schools take individual instrument tuition. There are some drama lessons, but th primasry drma experiebce are the plays produced by the children. Less attention is given to dance, but most schools provide lessons in social dncing and with the increasomg number of cped schools, more and more schools are offering balet and other performing dance instruction.
Art is probably given more attention in the curriculum than the other fine arts diciplines. The bulk of the program is hands on work with various artistic mediums rather than academic art appreciation studies. Many schools in the 1980s integrated art into a larger Craft, Design, and Technology curriculum which often are approached as more of an activity than a curriculum subject.

The most important event in the drama calendar this year was the school play "Listen to the Wind" which involved half the school ad most of the staff. .... All the forms that have drama lessons took part in the Buckingham Drama Festival and all did very well especially the third form who were awarded a first-class award. Simon Carder performed two more 'One Man Shows', one of which took place outside .... One of the most enjoyabl evenings this year was when David Glass, a mime artist, came and gave a performance in traditional mime. He had his audience spellbound for over an hour and he is coming back next term to give another performance and also to do a morning's workshop with the drama forms.

The children may spend more time in music, primarily because such a large number of students at most schools take individual instrument tuition. There is some classroom instruction. This often includes some hzands on experience with introductory instruments like recorders. It also includes some work in music appreciation. As music is not a Common Entrance subject, there tends to be substantial variation from school to school on both the emphasis and curriculum.
