British Preparatory Schools Photo Essays: Curriculum--Home Economics

Figure 1.--.

Home Economics is a subject that has long been offered at girls' schools. As a result it was also offered at coed schools. This included boys' schools that converted to coeducation. This means that more and more boys have been exposed to home economics. Some of the older boys may have questioned this, but the prep school home economics program generally has a heavy emphsis on cooking which have some obvious and immediate benefits. Children t prep schools, although, they have tick, do not snack like they do at home. Thus the output of the home economics class often provides a welcomed little treat.

Home Economics

Boy: "What are we making toda?"
S.K.: "Swiss roll".
Boy: "But, I don't like that!"
S.K. "Sorry, but you're here to learn to cook and not to feed your face!

How nice with the intoduction of CDT to get away from basic cookery and enjoy meal preparation asnd food presentation. I think masny of the staff have welcomed the change of emphasis in the HE room as they have come along to be entertained to lunch. The moans come from the staff not yet invited and not the children.

A big thank-you to Mr. Howley who kindly arranged for a group of girls to look behind the scenes of one of the local restaurants. Even better thought the girls when he footed the bill for lunch. I would be grateful to hear from anyone who can arrange for groups to visit food preparation establishmrntsd and the like. We won't expect to be fed.

We still managed to produce a good array of Christmas cakes. Well done to Tara Graham-Taylor who won the competition and to Christopher Sweatman, the runner-up!

Towards the end of the Spring term we tried our hand at sweet-making, while 5th Formers produced Simmel cakes. Unfortunately the Headmaster had acquired a new dog and we quickly had to remake Mark's, while Bonni was even less sleek having devoured the whole cake.

I was delighted to hear that Tara Graham-Taylor had qualified for the SE Regional Final of the Tricity "Junior Cook of the Year Competition". Watching her cook was a nail-biting experience, but how excited we were when she was announced the winner. Well done, Tara, and best wishes for the finals at the 'Savoy'.
