British Preparatory Schools Photo Essays: Curriculum--Information Technology

Figure 1.--.

This subject has different names and focuses from school to school. It is often referred to as Information Technology (IT). We have also seen it referred to as Information and Communication Technology (ICT). A key element has become computing. And thus many schools also call it "Computing". It has become a well-established subject. Most schools in the 1980s began adding computer rooms or even suites and the larger schools. The skills learned are applied across the school's curriculum. The computer not only provides a range of valuable programs (word processing, spread sheets, and others), but through the internet a wealth of valuable resources are avaiable to students in even rural locations at schools with very small libraries.

Computing

The tear has seen the full use of the BBC computers during every hour of the day. Well done to the team Computer Room Supervisors who have kept up a good record of looking after the room out of class hours. Even in the summer term when there are so many outside activities 42 children passed the Computer Test and joined the Club. Congratulations to Gavin Veness who not only invented his own airline, but made full use of the word processor to print out all manner of socuments for the airline. His reward is the prize of an outing to the Bournesmouth air traffic training centre. Well done Gavin! The class teaching has changed this year in that there is now less teaching of the languafe BASIC. In its place there is Word Processing, Information Technology and Spredsheets. One of the most popular programs was SCOOP. You were a journalist and you had to track down a millionaire. Journeys to the airport and across London were helped by the use of databases, Prestel, and all sorts of gadgets and devices. Congratulations to Richard Fletcher who is the winner of the computer prize. He wrote the winning entry for the Morse Code trainer, and his prize is a week's holiday donated by Beaumont Camps.
