British Preparatory Schools Photo Essays: Free Time--Skateboarding

Figure 1.--.

One of the most popular free time activities for the boys during the 1980s was skateboarding. Some schools let the boys bring their skateboards to school. This varied and some schools banned them. The schools that allowed skate boarding tended to be very strict about the children using them. There were restricted areas and protective gear was required. This seem to be an activity that only interested theboys. We did not notice girls with skate boards.

Prose

A cold wind glides through the branches, as a party of young children play games in an old leaflss tree. Below, an energetic team of boys race each other on skateboards, as th warm breeze collides with their faces making their hair blow in the wind. As the day grows old the children walked indoors and left the evening to be born and the day to die.

Alexis Orssich, 12 years, 2 months, Surge (Beeston Hall), Autumn 1988.

It's Banned

Skateboards by order of the right honourable Mr. T.H.B. Bowles, are banned!!! "Tragedy!" Half of the boys in Bramcote school cry, "My favourite occupation is banned!" But who can blame Mr Bowles for making such an announcement after all, it's their own fault! Before leave-out Mr Bowles announced that all skateboards were to be taken home and not to be brought back. Fr too many boys have been skateboarding in form rooms and have made several large holes in the walls.

Timothy Snipe, 11.7, The Bramcote Magazine, Autumn 1978
