Soccer better known as football is beyond a doubt the most popular sport in the world. While other important British sports spread primarily to Empire countries (cricket and rugby) or were transformed in America (baseball and gridiron football), soccer is play in virtually every country in the world. While it is another sport that has evolved in Britain. It has never, however, been accorded the same prestige as rugby at private schools. There were for many years a class association with rugby. Many schools for many years did not have football (soccer) programs. Some schools even banned boys from hicking a ball. This has gradually changed because of the emense popularity of the sport. Many boys at private schools wanted to play soccer. Thus soccer programs were added to the sports program and fixtures arranged with other schools. Even so it still does not have the presige of rugby. Thisd can be seen in the school magazines which commonly give far more attention to rugby than soccer.

Afternoon Sports

Many schools for many years did not have football (soccer) programs. Some schools even banned boys from hicking a ball. This has gradually changed because of the emense popularity of the sport. Many boys at private schools wanted to play soccer. SSoccer is normally doe during the Winter term meaning that the weather is often not very good for it. It is presumably done this way so it does not interfere with cricket in the summer term.

School Sports

Soccer programs have been added to the sports program at most schools. Thus there are now fixtures arranged with other schools. Even so it still does not have the presige of rugby, at least with the faculty. The mass media has made soccer popular among every social class. The school emphasis can be seen in the school magazines which commonly give far more attention to the results of rugby fixtures than soccer fixtures. Te senior team is called the "First XI". The junior team is called the "Colts".`

Soccer Club

Some of the minor sports like golf and squash are done as clubs rather than major school sports. In the case of soccer, which is an important sportng activity, some schools still include a soccer club in the activities programas well. Soccer or football as it is more commonly called uis not given as much emphasis as rugby and cricket. It is, however, emensely popular with the boys. This is for students who want a little extra coaching and practice period. It is generally chosen by children already very good at soccer. Given the substantial time devoted to cricket in the Summer Term sports program, it seems a little strange that boys would want even more cricket, but quite a number of boys take sports very seriously and choose the Soccer Club for
