Economics: Continuing Appeal of Socialism--Romantic Utopian Vision

Figure 1.-- The photo was taken in a village close to Alleppey, Kerala, India (March 12, 2015). This is a state in southwest India. A group of girls had their photo taken by a Communist flag, probably while they were walking home after school. The Communist party won the following local election in November. The Communist party has a large electoral base in Kerala, although the state economy doesn't follow socialist patterns largely because of the national laws and economic policies. Looking at these girls, they don't look like they belong to families living in a severe poverty condition. A girl is barefoot, but that looks more due to a choice than to poverty. The utopian appeal of socialist ideas continues to attract support despite the abject failure of every country that has tried implemnt a socialist economy. to

Third, the moraly guided romantic ethos of a perfect society in which everyones needs are met is intrincically much more apealing than the grey, amoral capitalist 'invisible hand' invisioned by Adam Smith, even though the capitalist invisible hand has proven to be more efficent at generating wealth. This can be observed in Latin America where many continued to be mesmerized by the romance of Communist revolution even though socialism has abjectly failed (Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela), and capitalist free market reforms have proven enormously sucessful (Brazil and Chile). In fact of the 50 or so countries that have attempted socialism--all have been abject failures. The only prosperous countries in the world are countries with core capitalist countries. While pronounced in Latin America, this ethic is certainly not limited to Latin America. There is a general left-wing bias among educators and media people throughout the Western world, including the United States. A good example of this is the 'Make Povery History' campaign. Despite its abject failure time and time again, socialism continues to attract vast support with its blissful utopian allure.
