Canadian Mail Order Catalogs and Advertisements with Boys Clothings: 1927

Figure 1.--Eatons offered this Norfolk styled knicker suit in its 1927 catalog. Notice the suit here is pictured with a flat cap and long stockings. Note the belt loops on the knickers. This was less common before World War I.

A T. Eaton catalog page offers a wide range of outfits for younger boys in 1927. Tunic suits have disappeared, but there are many other suit styles, including silor suits. Mist are kneepants or increasingly short pants suits. There are knicker suits for older boys, many with Norfolk styling. Older boys wore flat caps. We also note that long stockings were still very common. Eaton was a large Totonto Department Store.

Headwear

Flat caps were very popular for boys.

Suits

We notice quite a range of boys' suits in 1927. Younger boys suits were done in both sack styling as well as the lapelless jackets that button at the collar. There were also sailor suits. Norfolk styling was still popular. We note suits pants done as kneepants, short pasnts, knickers, and long pants.

Eaton's younger boys' Winter suits

Eaton's offered a range of younger boys' suits. There are both standard sack suits and the the lapelless jackets that buttoned at the collar. There was also a sailor suit. The suits were done in kneepants and knickers. All the boys in the ad are shown wearing black or brown long stockings. These suits are for boys from 3 to 10 years old. This ad appeared on p. 160 of the Eaton's Fall and Winter catalogue for 1927.

Sweaters

Shirts

Pants

Canadian boys commonly wore knickers as in the United States. Short pants were worn by yonger boys and long pants by older boys.

Hosiery

Canadian boys in the 1920s commonly wore both kneesock and long stockings. Both boys and girls commonly wore long stockings. Here we see a page from an Eaton's 1927 catalog offering many different kinds of long stockings. The fact that an entire page was devoted to long stockings and so many different types were offered is an indication of how popular they were.
