Eaton's Hosiery (Canada, 1939-40)

Figure 1.-- We notice hosiery being offered in the Eaton's Fall and Winter 1939-40 catalog. Long stockings were still particularly important among the hosiery offerings for children. We don't have a large enough scan to make out the ad copy, but the scans are useful. Click on the image to see another page from the catalog.

We notice hosiery being offered in the Eaton's Fall and Winter 1939-40 catalog. Eaton's was a major Canadian department store and mail order catalog company. Long stockings were still particularly important among the hosiery offerings offerings for children. We don't have a large enough scan to make out the ad copy, but the scans are useful. We can make out a little bit of the Eaton's ad for long stockings in French--just the headings, however. The girl on the left is wearing "Beautiful, solid color stockings of part-cashmere knit." One of the colors available is "light faun", which is close to tan. The boy on the right is wearing "blizzard" weight stockings for cold winters of "all-wool worsted yarn." Among the colors available in the all-wool stockings are "cardinal" (dark red), "black", "faun" (tan), and "brown". More information on color is available in a Eaton's 1941-42 catalog ad. A French reader writes, "This add is written in French, but isn't clear enough to make out much. It would be interesting to know how long stockings were translated in French Canada. In fact we don't have real word for this hosiery item in France. Boys did not commonly wear them. It may be "chaussettes 4-4" or "bas". A Canadian reader writes, " In French the term for long stockings is "bas longues". "Chausettes" refers to socks." I think there are some differences between France and French Canada in the use of hosiery terms.
