English Mail Order Catalogs and Clothing Advertisements with Boys Clothing: The 1960s

Figure 1.--This is an English advertisement for school suits. We are not sure where and when it appeared. It looks like an early 1960s ad to us. The use of the old monetary system helps to date it. We are not sure how the sizes here compare with age. Note that knicker is being used in the sence of short trousers.

English mail order catalogs offer a very useful time line on changing fashion trends. English mail order catalogs as well as newspaper and magazine ads provide great detail on fashion trends. We have very few 1960s catalogs or advertisements at this time, but we are beginning to collect information. In addition to catalogs, Parenting magazine is a particulsrly valuavle source, especially for younger children's clothes. We have one ad for suits. We have one ad for suits. We have another ad for playsuits in a wide variety of styles. One of our HBC readers remembers games at the time. We would be interested in any that our English readers might be able to contribute.

The 1960s

Adverisements are helpful because they came in caralogs anbd magazines that can be dated. Unfortunately some itemns have been seprated from the original publication and we do not jhave the date. We can usually determine the decde and have found some from the 1960s. The advertisement here is an English advertisement for school suits (figure 1). We are not sure where and when it appeared. It looks like an early 1960s ad to us. The use of the old monetary system helps to date it. We are not sure how the sizes here compare with age. Note that knicker is being used in the sence of short trousers. This is an older term which we do not notice brong used after the early-1960s. We also have some undated shoe advertisements. We note molded-rubber soles with animal and other foot prints.

1960

1961

1962

We do not yet have any 1962 catalogs, but a British reader has sent us some informative ads for younger children's clothing from Parenting magazine in 1962. The ad have informstion on snow suits and other inclement weather garments, underwear, liberty bodices, and shoes. Some contain a good bit of useful garments about the various items.

1963

We have found a Clarks' shoe adverisement for children's shoes from 1963. The ad made the point that both boys and girls could wear the same styles. This included both shoes and sandals. Strap shoes were mostly for girls but younger boys also wore them. Clarks' stress their width sizes to pemot a perfect fit. The children are pictured in school clothes in an after school setting. They have just purchased a treat in a local shop.

1964

1965

We notice a 1965 ad for Start-rite children's footwear. The company was well-known for school sandals.

1966

1967

We have another ad for playsuits in a wide variety of styles. One of our HBC readers remembers games at the time, but he and his mates did not have such formal outfits. We do not know in what catalog the ad appeared. We are not positive about the date, but believe it was 1967. The ad is not dated and in fact could have been in use for several years. The black and white format suggests that it first appeared earlier. They were the Ranger brand of playsuits. I'm not entirely sure of how they were marketed.

1968

1969

We note a Trutex Schoolwear add from 1969. Trutex was one of the primary manufacyurers of schoolwear in Britain. The interesting thing is that the boy on the left is David Parfitt who played the younger boy in the TV show And Mother Makes Three. Many of these young actors also modelled clothing, The other thing is that the Trutex schoolwear the boys are shown modelling here is the same range as HBC shows slightly older boys modelling on the school uniform.
