French Coats (1937)

Figure 1.--Galeries Lafayette offered this pardessus in its Spring children caralog. I'm not sure what a pardessus was and how it differed from a manteau. Perhaps it referred to the length. The one here was done with double-breasted styling for boys 8-12 years of age. Notice the term "Eversmart". French catalogs liked to use English terms to give an item a stylish image.

We note a range of coats being offered in French catalogs. There were several different styles made in various materials. We note coats desribed as both pardessus and manteau. We are not sure what the difference was. Double-breasted styles were popular. We also notice the gaberdine rain coats that British school boys wore.

Galeries Lafayette Pardessus (March 1937)

Galeries Lafayette offered this pardessus in its Spring children caralog. I'm not sure what a pardessus was and how it differed from a manteau. Perhaps it referred to the length. The one here was done with double-breasted styling for boys 8-12 years of age. Notice the term "Eversmart". French catalogs liked to use English terms to give an item a stylish image. The Galeries Lafayette ad copy read, "45.497. Pardessus 'Eversmart' Shetland belle qualité, entièrement doublé, 6 à 7 ans 225 Fr, 8 à 9 ans 130 Fr, 10 à 12 145 Fr." This translates as, "??? "Eversmart" good quality Shetland [wool] souble breasted. 6 to 7 years 225 Francs, 8 to 9 years 130 Francs, 10 to 12 145 Francs."
