Galeries Lafayette: Knitted Sailor Outfit (1937)

Figure 1.--We note an advertisement from Galeries Lafayette for a knitted sailor outfit for younger boys.

We note an advertisement from Galeries Lafayette for a knitted sailor outfit for younger boys. It has a sailor blouse done in a fancy style as well a very short cut shorts. This is a good example of the more juvenile styles for French boys that became popular in the mid-1930s.

Galeries Lafayette

The Louvre of department stores carries over 75,000 brand names, and welcomes (in the loosest sense) the equivalent of the entire population of Paris each month. Concessions run from Yohji Yamamoto to Gap. The menswear department has recently been given a make over and is now one of the largest in Europe. Also look for enormous departments dedicated to lingerie (an entire floor), beauty products, kitchenwares, books, records, home furnishings and even souvenirs. The two sixth floor restaurants offer panoramic views; Café Sushi is in adjoining Lafayette Maison.

Galleries Lafayette 1937 offered this knitted wool sailor outfit for a younger boy. It was done in sizes 2-6 years old. This was a classic style which appeared in the mid-1930s. The middy styled blouse here had balloon short sleeves. Other stylistic elements for blouses at this time included Peter Pan collars, emboiteries, and buttoning at the back for the younger styles. These blouses contyinued to be worn by boys into the early 1960s. The outfit here also includes very short cut short pants. The Galleries Lafayette ad copy read, "602-j364 Smart little pure wool suit. Fine knitting, new look, proposed: Navy blue and red; Brown and yellow; and Orange and sky (sky blue). From 2 till 6 years Price : 29 Francs." The price would have been considered quite expensive in 1937. This is a good examplw of how in the mid-1930s, especially aboyt 1936 that boys' garment becam more and more juvenil.
