French Fashion Magazine: Younger Boys' Costumes -- June 1947

Figure 1.--The June, 1947 issue of "Mode Pratigue" shows fancy outfits for children. There were puffed sleeve blouses and short and long pants for the boys and fancy dresses for the girls. These outfits are fashions for children to wear at weddings.

May and June are of course popular months for weddings. Thus French fashion magazines often ran wedding fashions during these months. Here are some fashions for children at different ages at a wedding.

Terminology

All terms used in this description are still used today in France.

Outfits

The June, 1947 issue of Mode Pratigue shows fancy outfits for children. There were puffed sleeve blouses and short and long pants for the boys and fancy dresses for the girls. These were outfits that children of different ages might wear at weddings. One outfit was in the sailor style.

Wedding Fashions

A French reader tells us, "Notice that outfits with long pants were quite used for boys in both weddings and Communion. Quite often the patterns gave the mother the choice of cutting the material for long trousers or short pants. This option does not appear on the descriptions shown on the page here (figure 1). Also note the puffed sleeves for the two younger boy's outfits. Very often the mothers were fond of the rounded Peter pan-style collar ( col Claudine ), but these fancy models do not have them. The boys are all pictured wearing white gloves."

Mode Pratique

La Mode Pratique was a very popular fashion magazine in France." We are not sure, but believe it is a fashion magazine, or possibly a sewing magazine. We have few details on the publishing history of the magazine at this time. We do note that it was published during the 1920s. We do not yet know, however when it was founded or ceased publication. It appears to have had considerable information about children's clothing. We do know that it was published throughout the 1930s-40s and into the 50s.
