German Mail Order Catalogs: Suit Pants (1883)

Figure 1.--All we know about these knee pants, a German catalog item, is that they appeared in a 1883 catalog. We will know more when we get the caption translated. It looks like the pants to a juvenile suit. Notice the boddice. This is a very helpful image as bodices do not show up in photographic portraits. They seem to have been, however, commonly used for children clothes. Without this image we might have guessed that the suit was a button-on outfit.

This item from a 1883 German catalog looks to be knee pants for a liitle boys' suit. All we know about these knee pants, a German catalog item, is that they appeared in a 1883 catalog. The ad copy reads, "16. Beinkleid zum Anzug für Knaben von 3-5 Jahren. Abb.35.Schnitt u. Beschreibung, Vorders.d.Beilage. Nr.III. Fig.11-12, a-h." This means, " 16. Breeches/trousers ["Beinkleid" is a very, very old-fashioned German word] of a suit for boys of 3 to 5 years of age. Figure 17. Look also to Figure 35. Pattern and description: Cover of attachment, number III, figure 11-12. a-h." We don't know what a-h means.
