Night shirts were still worn to bed in the 1880s by both adults and children. We note two styles of night shirts for boys offered in an unidentified German catalog during 1889. The major difference was the collar. One was brightly embroidered. Both had fancy fronts. As far as we know, pajamas were not yet worn in Germany.
The ad copy provides some information (figure 1). On the left: "Nachthemd für Knaben von 12-14 Jahren
Verwendbarer Schnitt: siehe Beschreibung. Normalschnitte u. Größen für das Alter von 8 - 16 Jahren."
That means, "Nightshirt for boys of 12-14 years (of age). Suitable cut: see description. Standard cut and sizes for the ages of 8-16 years."
On the right: Taghemd für Knaben von 12-14 Jahren. Schnitt und Beschreibung: Schnittmusterbeilage, Nr.VIII, Fig.49-53.
Normalschnitte in 4 Größen für das Alter von 8-16 Jahren." That means, "(Day)shirt for boys of 12-14 years. Cut and description: Supplement for cut and pattern, # VIII, Fig.49-53 Standard cuts in 4 sizes for the ages of 8-16 years."
