German Mail Order Catalogs with Boys Clothings: 1903

Figure 1.--Quite a range of different styles of suits, many full sailor suits or with sailor styling, were available in the S. Model catalog. This apparas to be from the fall-winter catalog. Most came with knicker pants and were worn with long stockings.

German clothing catalogs offer a very useful time line on changing fashion trends. The S. Model catalog for 1903 shows a variety of coats for boys and girls. Double breasted styles seem the most popular. There were both reefer jackets and longer coats. There was also a cloak style which was more popular in France. I can not read the text, but many of these styles look to be for older boys. The boys are pictured in various cap styles including sailor and golf caps. One boys wears a Glengary and the older boys Fedora style hats. Girls wear broad brimmed sailor styles. Quite a range of different styles of suits, many full sailor suits or with sailor styling, were available in the S. Model catalog. This apparas to be from the fall-winter catalog. Most came with knicker pants and were worn with long stockings, at least in the Fall and winter.

Headwear

The boys are pictured in various cap styles including sailor and golf caps. One boys wears a Glengary and the older boys Fedora style hats. Girls wear broad brimmed sailor styles. Boys wore sailor caps with sailor suits, but also other styles liked parked caps looking more like an army cap.

Sailor Suits

Quite a range of different styles of suits, many full sailor suits or with sailor styling, were available in the S. Model catalog. This apparas to be from the fall-winter catalog. Most came with knicker pants and were worn with long stockings, at least in the Fall and winter. I can't quite make out the sizing in the available image (figure 1).

Suits

We notice both single and double breasted suits. Some suits have Norfolk styling. Other boys have suits with lapels. Younger boys wear sailir suits or suits with jackets that button to the collar.

Shirts

German boys wore a variety of shirts and blouses. Many shirts came without collars. We notice detachable collars in several different styles. This was quite common at the time and we notice them in other countries. We notice examples from the the German wholesale company A. Wertheim in Berlin. They were offered from their 1903-04 catalog. A. Wertheim in their 1903-04 catalog. Wertheim does not use standard terms for the different collars, but rather proper names. These were presumably store names and not standard German terms. In addition there was a garment that seems to have been worn rather like a dickey with various suits. We notice examples from the A. Wertheim 1903-04 catalog. They were called Vorhemden. I think that meant sonething like for shirt or shirt front. I am not entirely sure why a shirt front was needed. Hopefully a HBC reader with a better understanding of turn-of the-century shirts will help us here. Some also had collars attached. We have not notice these in American catalogs at the time, but perhaps we have not adequately investigated the topic yet.

Pants

Knicker pants are commonly worn buy boys. Some sailor suits have long pants, but knckes are more common. Older boys may have have long pants suits.
