Dutch Mail Order Catalogs and Advertisements with Boys Clothings: 1935


Figure 1.--This illustration from a Dutch magazine Katholieke Illustratie in 1935 showed some casual styles for boys. Mothers could buy the sewing patterns. Besides the main garments they also show other garments such as the shoes and socks boys were wearing in Spring 1935.

I am not sure just when mail order catalogs appeared. Advertisments and fashion magazines as well as sewing magazines provide use information on Dutch styles in 1935. Dressy clothes were a combination of old and new styles. Casual clothes were becoming increasingly popular.

Shirts

In addition to traditional shirts with shirttails that were tucked it, boys also wore jacket like shirts that looked liked jackets. Interestingly some had the look of an Eisenhower jacket that the American gebneral made so popular during World War II in the 1940s. There were also rugby-style shirts for casual wear. One fancy colored blouse or shirt had a Peter Pan collar and cuffs in white.

Pants

Boys commonly wore short pants, both for dress and casualwear. One style of shorts had the three buttons added giving a look like kneepants. This was done for pants to be worn for dressy or formal occasions.

Casual Styles

Dutch boys in the 1930s were wearing much more casual clothes than has been the case in earlier decades. Even a garment that looks likes modern sweatpants appeared worn with a rigby-type pullover shirt.

Hosiery

Kneesocks were commonly worn. Sone had patterened tops. White kneesocks were also popular.
