Dutch mail order catalogs and advertisements offer a very useful time line on changing fashion trends. HBC has only noted Dutch catalogs, however, beginning in the 1960s. We have noted eralier sewing catalogs. Advertisments appeared even earlier. All of these publications offer valuable insights as to fashion trends.

The 1930s

Sewing magazines had a number of different dressy outfits for boys with both short and long pants styles. They are an interesting mixture of old and new styles.

The 1950s

There may have been Dutch clothing catalogs beginning earlier than the 1960s, but HBC has not yet noted any. There were, however, many depictions in fashion and women magazines back to the early 19th century. A womans magazines show boys wearing rompers and short pants suits in the early 1950s. Younger boys might even wear a lace collar for formal events and shorts with button on styling.

The 1960s

Increasingly casual styles were apparent in the 1960s. Boys wore suits less and blazers became more coomon. Even more common were a variety of informal jackets. Swaeters ciontinued to be popular. Boys still commonly wore shorts pants, but not nearly as commonly in the 1950s. Long opants had become much more common by the end og the decade. Jeans in particular grew in popularity during the decade.

The 1970s

Fewer Dutch boys were wearing short pants in the 1970s. But many younger bous still wore then--increasingly seasonally during the warm summer months. The shorts that were worn tended to be quite short.
