Scottish Mail Order Catalogs and Advertisemgents for Kilt Outfits: The 1950s

Figure 1.--This catalog offered a range of kilt and other Higland outfits for children, both boys and girls. The kilt was a male garment and there are a range of kilt and plaid outdits and garments. There was also a page for girls, but they were mostly, but not exclusively dancing costumes or plid skirts. Put yojur cirsor on th boy's page to see the girl's page.

We have found an unidentified catalog or adverisement page offering kilts. It is also undatedm but looks like the 1950s to us. This company offered both boys anf girls kilts. The boys kilts were bodice kilts age up to age 7 years. The kilts for younger boys were meant to be worn with a short or jersey (sweater) without a jacket. For dress occassions such as a party or special occassions a blouse is worn. Boys crepe blouses were offered for both younger and older boys. The type of collar is not soecified. The kilts for older boys were meant to be worn with a tweed jacket and waistcoat (vest) or pullover. Notice that the ad copy reads jacket 'and' waistcoat not 'or'. An illustration does show a boy wearing a waustcoat with short pants. The waist coats began for boys age 3 years. There was also velvet jackets done in blck or green. Also offered are kilt plaid drawers which I think meant unserpants. I don't think that they were very common. There were tweed jackets for regular wear and velvet jackets for dressing up. The tweed jacker began for boys age 8 years. There were also kilts for girls. The most prominent outfit show with tam is the Highland dancing outfit. The other ilustrated outfit is a kilted suspender skirt for girls 3-12 years. Offered on the girls page or tartan slecks for both boys and girls. There were also kilts for girls. We think this is a relatively new development. As for the boys, the kilts for younger girls were done with bodicies. We also notice 'tartan costumes' which seems to doubled breasted jacket and pleated skirt. And unlike the boys, a tartan jcket (called a cot) was on offer.
