Swiss Mail Order Catalogs with Boys Clothings: Jelmoli Raincoat (1938)

Figure 1.--

Swiss boys wore a variety of capes and coats. We note Jelmoli offering both a cape and an overcoat type rain coat on the page with suits. The raincoat seems to be more of a generalized overcoat style.

Jelmoli

We note a catalog form the Grand magasins Jelmoli. Grand magasins Jelmoli has for many years been the flagship department store chain of Switzerland. Johann Peter Jelmoli-Ciolina founded founded the store in 1938 by . Ciolina must have been the maiden name of his wife. He was from the Swiss-italian section of Switerland. The company has always been headquartered in Zurich where the flag-ship department store was opened. It opened branches throughout Switrzerland, but a few years back it sold or closed all its branches and only kept the large store in Zurich. I would say it was always an "up-scale" department store. The catalog-department was a very small part of their operations and the catalogs carried a very small amount of merchandise, compared to what was available in their stores. The catalog-department was added in 1899.

Jelmoli Raicoat: Knaben-Regenmantel

Swiss boys wore a variety of capes and coats. We note Jelmoli offering both a cape and an overcoat type rain coat on the page with suits. The raincoat seems to be more of a generalized overcoat style. The Jelmoli ad copy read, "Knaben-Regenmantel, gummiert, absolut wasserdicht, Farbe mittelgrau, Laengen 55 – 110cm, für 3-15 Jahre pass. This translates as, "Boys rubberized raincoat, absolutely waterproof, color mid-y, lengths 55 - 110cm. For age 3-15 years." I'm not sure what "pass" means. A reader tells us, "From what I can ascertain your translation is OK as it is. I think the "pass" adds an element of "fitting" as in "suitable" - so you could possible embellish it with 'suitable' for age 3-15." The base price was Fr. 7.50 or 10.50 for the 55 cm (3 year old) coat with 50 Rp (0.5 Fr) added for each additionasl 5 cm. There were two options here. The lower price was for a batist lining and the higer price for a satin lining.
