Jelmoli Children's Summer Sandals (1938)

Figure 1.-- The Jemoli catalog offered several styles of children's sandals on the page for women's summer shoes. There is no mention of gender for the sandals, so they were presumably for both boys and girls. The closed-toe "t"-sdtrap style seemed particularly popular. They were on page 72 of the Jelmoli catalog.

Jelmoli

We note a catalog form the Grand magasins Jelmoli. Grand magasins Jelmoli has for many years been the flagship department store chain of Switzerland. Johann Peter Jelmoli-Ciolina founded founded the store in 1838 by . Ciolina must have been the maiden name of his wife. He was from the Swiss-italian section of Switerland. The company has always been headquartered in Zurich where the flag-ship department store was opened. It opened branches throughout Switrzerland, but a few years back it sold or closed all its branches and only kept the large store in Zurich. I would say it was always an "up-scale" department store. The catalog-department was a very small part of their operations and the catalogs carried a very small amount of merchandise, compared to what was available in their stores. The catalog-department was added in 1899.

Conventions

Presumably sandals were worn seasonally in Switzerland. They were worn by both boys and girls. Here they are included on a page for women's summer sandals.

Styles

Here are the various styles of sandals for boys. The "t"-strap style seems the most popular.

Sandalen, braun Boxleder

This was a a brown "t"-strap sabdl with round air holes. The Jelmoli ad copy read, "Sandalen, braun Boxleder, mit biegsamen Doppelsohlen, genaeht, beste Ausfuerhung Gr. 22 -26 Fr. 5.90 – Gr. 36-43 Fr.9.80."

Weisser Stoffspangenschuh

This white "t"-stap sandal was done in the smallest size. The Jelmoli ad copy read, "Weisser Stoffspangenschuh mit Ledersohle, beliebter Sommerschuh. Gr. 19-25 Fr.3.25 – Gr. 36-40 Fr. 5.50."

Riemensandale

This sandal is often referred to as a Roman sandal, but this was not the case here. I have always seen this sandal style as a boy's style. Thefre is, however, no mention of gender in the ad copy. The Jelmoli ad copy read, "Riemensandale. Naturform, starke, flexible genaehte Sohle und Gelenkstuetz, mit Vorderriemen. Gr. 22-26 Fr.3.50 – Gr.43 -47 Fr. 6.50."

Baune Leder-Sandalen

This is another brown "t"-strap sandal. It is similar to the previous one except the air holes are oblong. The Jelmoli ad copy read, "Baune Leder-Sandalen, gute Ausfuehrung, starke Rohgummisohle, sehr strapazierfaehig. Gr. 24-26 Fr. 5.90 – Gr. 36-42 Fr. 9.50."

"Braune Riemensandale

The Jelmoli ad copy read, "Braune Riemensandale mit Kappe und Contrefort, genaeht. Gr. 22-26 Fr. 5.90 – Gr 36-42 Fr.8.90."
