Jemoli Younger Boys' Outfits: Individual Garments (1938)

Figure 1.--Here we have three of the younge boys outfits from the 1938 Jelmoli catalog.

We note several outfits for younger boys in the Jelmoli 1938 catalog. Some seem like play clothes. Other outfits may have been suitable for dressier occassions, although I don't think they would have been a boy's best outfit. The Jelmoli ad copy describes the design and material, but provides no indication of the suitability for various activities. They are for boys 1 1/2 - 6 years of age, this varied from garment to garment. All but the overalls are done in short pants. Stylistically, it is not real clear wht made the various outfits suitable for younger or older boys. Some of the outfits were made for just todler boys while others were made for both todlers and boys just beginning school. This reflects the age group and I think these were mostly for summer wear. The sailor suit outfit had buttons at the leg hem, suggesting that this might be an outfit suitable for dressy occassions. Here we have information on the various outfits offered on this page. Jelmoli had nine different outfits for younger boys. And the ad copy provides some interesting information about the different styles.

Suspender Shorts/Träger-hose

The suspender shorts were made in toddler sizes (figure 1). The ad copy read, "Träger-hose aus waschechtem Satin-Coutil, marine oder Covercoat-Stoff braun meliert, sehr solid". This meant, "Suspender trousers of colorfast navy satin drill [or twill], of heather brown covercoat material, very sturdy. Ages 1 1/2 to 4".

Washsuit/Waschanzug

Here we think Waschanzug means washsuit (figure 1). The ad copy read, "Elegant. Waschanzug aus Leinen, mit aparter Garnitur, absolut waschecht, unverwüstlich im Tragen, bleu oder rohleinen". This meant, Elegant. Linen washsuit, with distinctive top, absolutely colorfast, long-wearing, blue or raw linen. Ages 1 1/2 to 5.

Sailor Washsuit/Waschanzug, Matrosen-Bluse

Here we have a sailor suit. Note the button-on styling. The outfits here are mostly button-on garments, but it is sometimes obscured by self-belts. These features are not addressed in the ad copy. Also note the buttons at the leg hem (figure 1). The ad copy read, "Waschanzug, Matrosen-Bluse, blau-weiss gestreifter Satin-Coutil und dunkelblaue Coutilhose, garantiert waschecht". This meant, Washsuit, blue & white striped satin twill sailor blouse, and dark-blue twill trousers, guaranteed colorfast. Ages 2 to 6".

Washsuit/Waschanzug

The ad copy read, "Reizender Waschanzug, Bluse klein kariert, aus leinen-artigem, grauem Waschstoff, Hose aus blauem Satin, waschecht". This meant, "Attractive washsuit, fine-checked blouse of linen-like gray wash material, blue satin trousers, colorfast. Ages 2 to 5".

Washsuit/Waschanzu

The ad copy read, "Waschanzug aus solidem blaugrau meliert. Köper, hübsch mit bleu garniert, garantiert waschecht". This meant, Washsuit from sturdy bluish gray heather. Twill, with pretty blue decoration, guaranteed colorfast. Ages 1 1/2 to 3".

Play Trousers/Spiel hose

The ad copy read, "Praktische Spiel hose für Knaben, aus solidem, waschechtem Zephir, bleu oder beige". This meant, Practical play trousers for boys, of sturdy colorfast zephir [a cotton fabric?], blue or beige. Ages 1 1/2 to 4.

Overalls

Boys' overalls were new to Europe at that time, probably a fashion imported from the the United States. Hence a "novelty"The ad copy read, "Neuheit! Overall für Knaben, neues, praktisches Modell aus bestem, waschechtem Satin, khaki oder bleu". This meant, Novelty! Boys' overalls, new practical model from best colorfast satin, khaki or blue. Ages 1 1/2 to 6

Suspender Trousers/Trägerhose

The ad copy read, "Trägerhose aus Leinen, garantiert waschecht, bleu mit weiss oder beige mit bleu garniert". This meant, Suspender trousers made of linen, guaranteed colorfast, blue w/white- or beige w/blue trim. Ages 1 1/2 to 5.

Button-up/ Anknöpfer

Here I'm not real sure how to transate "Anknöpfer". The ad copy read, "Anknöpfer, neue Form, aus leinen-artig. Waschstoff, écru mit Noppen, waschecht". This meant, Button-up, new form, of linen-like wash material, colorfast nubbly écru. Ages 1 1/2 to 4.
