Figure 1.--We have found a few items from 1889. Fauntleroy suits had become an important style by the 1880s. We note a Fauntleroy suit from an unidentified publication with some information on materials used. This was a collar buttoning suit with a crocheted collar and an elaborate sash. The suit is worn with long stockings. The illustration comes from the New York Public Library collection. They have sourced the item as PET. We are not yet sure what publication that abreviation represents.

The suit is the collar buttoning suit with a pin-on collar rather thasnb the classic cut-away jacket. The ad copy reads, "A Little Lord Fauntleroy suit of blasck velvet. Collar and cuffs of crocheted guipure. Sash of cream-white surah or China silk." We are not sure what guipure was. Notice the depiction of long uncurled hair. We see thast in illustrations, but the photogaphic record suggests that when long hair was wirn, it was usually done in ringets.
