40R140: Boy's Pink Chambray Suit

Figure 1.--Sears in 1902 offered many knee-pants sailor suits for boys 3-10 years of age. The styling varies somewhat and their are many different colors. This one was surprisingly a pink suit with white trim. We do not know how popular such suits were.

This sailor suit was made in chambray, a fine cloth, usually of cotton but alkso of silk or linnen. In this case it was surely cotton. Surprising this suit was made in pink, showing that modern color conventions had not yet been established.

Trousers

This suit like all the other sailor suits offered by Sears in 1902 were kneepants suits with buttons at the leg hem. There were no short pamts, knicker, or long pants suits.

Age

All of the sailor suits offered by Sears in 1902 were for boys fom 3-10 years. There were no suits for younger or older noys.

Seasonality

These suits all seem to be the ones for summer wear. Note that there are no heavy wool sailor suits that the boys would have worn in winter.

Sears Ad Copy

The Sears ad copy read, "Boy's Pink Chambray Suit, 75 cents. Made from an extra heavy quality of pink wash chambray. Guaranteed absolutely fast color. Trimmed on collar and shield with white duck. Monogram in center of shield. Large sailor collar. One of he best wash suits you could possibly purchase. No. 40R10 Price for boys' wash suit for boys aged 3 to 10 years ... 75 cents."

Color

Sailor suits are generally seen as blue and white garments. Sears in 1902 offered many other colors. This one was surprisingly a pink sailor suit. It shows that modern color coinventions were not yet established. HBC wonders though if a 10 year old boy would really trot iff to school in a pink sailor suit. We do not know how popular such suits were. Note that each style of suit was only available in one color or color combination.

Hair Styles

Sears shows many of the boys wearing the illustrated sailor suits with various hair styles. Many wear long hair, but none wear ringlets. The boy here has short hair.
