American Support Garments: Ideal Suspender Waist (1904)

Figure 1.-- This is another model of the Ideal waist. This one is a different model, designed, I think, for warmer weather since it is skeleton model with only straps and has no body (like the conventional underwaist). It's also designed specifically for boys.

This is another model of the Ideal waist. This waist consists simply of suspender straps (non-elastic except for an inserted part in the back) and a waistbelt with taped buttons for attaching additional underwear and/or knee trousers. There are tape tabs at the sides for attaching hose supporters. The tabs have metal eyelets in them so that the supporter pins can be held firmly and securely in place without tearing the fabric of the waist. In fact, this model of the Ideal waist is very similar to the Dr. Parker garter waist which became a household name in the following decades and was widely advertised in newspapers and magazines up through the mid-1940s. If you look closely, you can see the white hose supporters pinned onto the waist at the hips in the illustration. Having detachable hose supporters was an advantage for mothers because (1) they could launder the waist by detaching the garters, and (2) the elastic garters, which, being elastic, would wear out sooner than the waist itself, could easily be replaced. This skeleton model was advertised in May, 1904, just before the onslaught of the warmer summer months, and was cooler for boys to wear than the winter model, advertised the same year in October. This ad appeared in the Ladies Home Journal (May, 1904, page 52) when mother would be shopping for lighter weight or summer clothes for their sons. Notice, however, that in the illustration, even in May, the boy is wearing long underwear, apparently a union suit.
