Buster Brown Long Stockings (1910s)

Figure 1.-- We also note Buster Brown long stockings. These ads probably appeared throughout the 1900s and 10s. We do notice other Buster Brown items around the same time. Note that the stockings for boys are available in either black or tan which seems to point to a date later than 1910. I'm not sure where this ad appeared.

We also note Buster Brown long stockings. These ads probably appeared throughout the 1900s and 10s. We initially based our dating of the Buster Brown stocking ad partly on the price of the stockings (25 c. a pair), which I thought placed the ad in the later 1910s. But I have since noticed that Iron Clad stockings were selling for this price about a decade earlier, so I think my dating may be a bit too late. Its hard to be specific here. We do notice other Buster Brown items around the same time. Buster Brown was a famous comic strip character at the time who became the mascot for the Brister Brown Shoe Company. There was also the Buster Brown's Hosiery Mills which made the long stockings seen here. Note that the stockings for boys are available in either black or tan which seems to point to a date later than 1910. Buster Brown Hosiery made stockings for men, women, girls and boys, but boys seem to have been especially stressed in the advertising because of the comic book character Buster Brown. Buster Brown hose supporters for boys and girls were being widely advertised during the same period. They were sold all over the United States. The ad copy read, "Buster Brown's Guaranteed Stockings--For Men, Women and Children. Trade Mark Registered. Darn! Why darn? If you buy Buster Brown's Guaranteed Hosiery for the whole family there'll be no darning to do. Silk Lisle Half Hose for Men, black, tan, navy, gray, heliotrope, purple and burgundy. Lisle Hose for Ladies, medium and gauze weight; black or tan. Combed Egyptian Hose for Boys, light and heavy weight, black or tan.
