Gimble's Dimity Boy and Girl Dress (1919)

Figure 1.--Skirted garments were by 1919 less commonly worn wirn, even by very young boys. Dresses wre no longer common for boys, but we do still see occassional advertisements like this Gimble's ad in 1919..

Skirted garments were once very commonly worn by younger boys. Skirted garments were by 1919 less commonly worn wirn, even by very young boys. Dresses wre no longer common for boys, but we do still see occassional advertisements. we note the famous Gimbles department store in New York offering dimitry dresses for boys and girls. Gimbles of course is one of the most famous New York department stores. It was the main competitor to Macey's which has become the most important Amerucan department store chain. We see adds identiftying dresses for both boys and girls after ads for specifucally boy dresses disappear. The ad copy reads, "E-9202. White Dimity Dress. Washes perfectly. Box-pleated front and back. Turndown collar. All-around belt. Can be worn by a boy or girl. Comes in sizes, 1 to 4 years. $1.95 Postage, 5 cents." I am not entirely sure what dimity is, but believe it is the fabric. The dress is styled somewhat similarly to the tunic suits that were still worn at the time. Looks like this dress has a boyish collar which means it has the two points in front. Also the box pleating and belt are boyish features. On the page are many dresses and this dress for boys is for the oldest age of up to 4 years old. Also, look at the hair with bangs. The only difference between a girl and a boy in the illustrations is that there is not a bow in the boy's hair. The boy is also pictured in strap shoes.
