American Mail Order Catalogs with Boys Clothings: 1922--Shirts

Figure 1.--The boy's shirt page all seemed to have colored shirts that were not desined to be worn with ties.

Wards styled this page, "Hard wearing shirts for boys". It is significant because earlier boys shirts might more commonly be terme as "blouses" or "shirt waists". It is in the early 1920s after World War II (1914-18) that moern-looking boys' shirts begin to appear. The Eton collar was still common in the early 1920s, especially for casual wear. Theses shirts do not appear made for dress weasr. There are no shirts, but many varied colors. There are bothbcollared shirts and neckband style. Material incueded percail, madras, chambray, flannel and others.

Fine Part Wool Flannel

The ad copy reads, "An exceptional value in a fine flannel Shirt of part wool. Well made throughout to give splendid wear, comfort and warmth. Has flat collar, buttoned cuffs two buttoned down flap pockets. Sizes: 12 to 14 inch neck." Colors include brown, green, and khaki, The price was $2.19, postage 3 cents extra.

Warm serviceable, part wool flannel shirts

There were three types of these shirts. I can't read the text for the first one.

The ad copy for the second one reads, "A warm, part wool flannel Shirt which will give complete satisfaction. Flat collar; [unclear text] pockets. 12 to 14 inch neck." They were available in khaki and gray and cost $1.69.

The third type reads, "Neat part wool flannel Shirt with high link collar; buttoned cuffs; one pocket, button down flap. Coat style. Sizes 12 to 14 inch neck." The colors were tan and gray. They cost $1.48. Postage was 3 cents extra.

Comments

Wards in 1922 also had shirts that are called blouses on the page called night shirts or pajamas. It is the facing page to this page. I am not positive what the distinction is between what Montgomery Ward called blouses and what they called shirts. Unless a blouse did not have a shirt tail and that need not be described.
