American Mail Order Catalogs with Boys Clothings: Lane Bryant Spring Summer Outfits (1928)


Figure 1.--We also have a descriptions of the items shown on the Lane Bryant Spring-Summer 1928 cover. There are outfits that look to have a Kate Greenaway influencefir both boys and girls. There is also a patterned boys' coat, something not very common. All of the outfits outfits have coordinated headwear. We do not yet have a copy of the cover, but the ad copy section has some images.

9K 175 -- Coat and Hat

The coat here looks like it was spotted, actuall we think that is meant to reprepesent a plaid pattern. The ad copy read, "How he swagers valong in his jolly Tweed Reefer and Hat to match, with the cute little cane to make the other boys stare with envy! He enjoys looking so manly. Stylish souble breasted Coat of All-Wool Tweed Mixture with contrasting rayon plaid. Raglan sleeves, mannisg collar, flap pcket. Lined with silk-finished Venetian. COLORS: Tan or gray mixture. SIZES: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 years. Cane free. Coat $6.95. Post. 8¢ ex." The coat is call a reefer by Lane Bryant because it was double-breasted.

9K 495 --Tweed Hat

Thge ad copy read, "Tweed Hat to match coat No. 9K 175. Stiched brim can be worn up or down. Twill lining. Tan or gray mixture. Sizes: 6 1/8 to 6 7/8 (hat sizes). Price $1.45. Post. 5¢ ex." This is not a hat style we see many American boys wearing in the ohotograohic record.

9K 496 -- Pique Hat

Piqué, or marcella, refers to a weaving style, normally used with cotton yarn, which is characterized by raised parallel cords or geometric designs in the fabric. The as copy read, "White Imported Pique Hat trimmed with cording, stitched in blue, red or green. Rlastic in back]. Sateen lining. One size: To fit 1 to 4 years. Price .... 98 ¢. Postage 5¢ extra." The hat went with the Kate Greenaway styled Fast color Suit.

9K 2126 -- Fast Color Suit

This item is paired with a girls' itemm with a Kate Greeaway look The ad copy reads, "What smarter outfit for a warm, sunny day could the little fellow want. And its just as ptactical, for this two-piece Suit will wash and wear well. Double-breasted Blouse is of White Imported Pique withnsmall dots in color to match the durable Devonshire (a mercerized fabric, sun proof and fast color) used for collar and cuffs and button-on pants. COLORS: White blouse with blue, red or green pants and trimmings. SIZES: 1, 2, 3 and 4 years. $1.98. Post. 6¢ ext." A piqué hat (9K 496) went with the suit.

9K 3100 -- For Sister

This was a girl's comapnion outfit for the Kate Greenaway influenced little noys outfit--Fast Color Suit (9K 2126). The ad cooy read, "Little sister loves a silk dress--and this one is in perfect taste. Dressed in thiss dainty Natural Tan, All-Silk Pongee Frock with bonnet to match [9K 4100]. The little tot will have an ideal outfit for warm weather wear. Pointed front yoke effect is hand-smocked in rose and green: two tone silk ribbon streamers. Buttoned in back. SIZES: 1, 2, 3, 4 years. Price, dress, $1.98. Post 4¢ ex." We are not sure what the buttons in the back were for, perhaps to tighten the waist line, but we see no waustline in the image. Dresses more commonly had a bow in the back.

9K 4100 -- Ruffled Bonnet

There was a bonnet to go wih the Kate Greemaway influenced frock. The ad copy read, "Ruffled Bonnet to match dress. Embroidery in rose and green trims band and two-tone silk ribbon rosettes and streamers. Elastic back. Sateen Blend. One Size: To fit child 1 to 4 years. Price: .... $1.29. Post 4¢ ex."
